Firstly, identify when your grass grows the most actively. If your grass grows most actively during the summer, then it is most likely warm-season type of grass. If it instead grows most actively in the spring and autumn, it is probably cool-season grass. Lastly, warm-season grass turns a brownish color in the winter when it goes dormant while cool-season ones stay green.

It is one of the most easily identifiable grasses because of its unique hair-like texture. It has a soft or dull green color and tends to gather together in tufts. Kentucky Bluegrass
Kentucky Bluegrass is one of the most popular species of grass for personal use, especially in the Northern United States. It has a distinctive blueish green tone and soft texture. Kentucky Bluegrass also has a visible vein running down its middle (these are known as midribs). Like Bentgrass, it also has the ability to repair itself because of its rhizomes and is more likely to produce thatch. If your lawn is made from sod, there is a good chance that it is Kentucky Bluegrass, but it is also known to grow well from seed.
Ryegrass
Another type of grass is the Ryegrass, in both its annual and perennial varieties, is known for its quick growing time and bright green color. A defining characteristic of Ryegrass is its visible veins within the blades. It germinates very quickly and like Kentucky Bluegrass has a prominent midrib. Young ryegrass blades may be folded along this midrib. Despite being a cool-season grass, ryegrass is also popular in the south for overseeding during the winter. Ryegrass can thrive in southern winters and keep lawns green all winter long.

Tall Fescue
Tall Fescue is another type of grass that has the coarse-textured counterpart of Fine Fescue. Like Fine Fescue, Tall Fescue has a soft green color, can also thrive in poor soil conditions, and tends to grow in tufts. It has distinctive, equally sized vein ridges without a midrib. However, unlike Fine Fescue, it can withstand more heat and foot traffic. Tall Fescue is a cool-season grass along with Kentucky Bluegrass that can grow in transition zones, such as the Carolinas, Oklahoma, and the North of Texas.
Warm-Season Grass
Bahia
Bahia is a coarse-textured grass that grows in very warm climates. Although it is not a very popular turf type, it is very easily identifiable because of its distinctively tall and Y-shaped seedheads. Bahia grass stands up extremely well to sandy soils or drought conditions. Because it grows via stolons, it also has the ability to repair itself, though not as well as Bermuda or Kentucky Bluegrass.
Bermuda
Bermuda is a very popular type of grass for both warm climates and transition zones. Because it spreads through both stolons and rhizomes, it is excellent at repairing itself and prone to thatch. Bermuda can be identified by its seedhead, which resembles a bird’s foot. It also grows very densely and has a high tolerance for close mowing, which makes it a popular choice for southern golf courses. However, Bermuda has very high fertilizer, water, and maintenance needs.
Centipede
Centipede grass is a densely growing grass that grows very well in warm humid climates. Despite being a warm-season grass, it has good cold tolerance and can therefore also grow in transition zones. Centipede naturally grows quite short and therefore does need constant mowing. Centipede blades are rounded and have a white midrib down their center; they also have spiky seedheads that are slightly purple in color.
Saint Augustine
Although St. Augustine grass is very similar to Centipede grass in shape and texture, they do have a few differentiating qualities. For example, St. Augustine is deeper in color than Centipede and has greater shade tolerance. St. Augustine does have midrib, but it is not white like Centipede’s. Lastly, St. Augustine does not produce many viable seeds; its seedheads are thick with just a few large seeds. It is of note that St. Augustine grass is rarely grown from seed and is instead usually grown from sod or plugs.
Zoygia
The most identifiable characteristic of Zoysia grass is its wiry texture. Its stiff blades are slightly curled and light green in color. Its hardy texture also means that stands up well against heavy foot traffic. However, despite its ability to self-repair, it grows extremely slowly. It can even take up to a year to establish Zoysia from seed.
